TAG QUESTIONS FOR 9°

Tag Questions

A tag question is a short question added to the end of a positive or negative statement. A tag question is a special construction in English. It is a statement followed by a mini-question. We use tag questions to ask for confirmation. They mean something like: "Is that right?" or "Do you agree?"

They are very common in English.

The basic structure of a tag question is:

positive statement negative tag
Snow is white, isn't it?

negative statement positive tag
You don't like me, do you?

Notice that the tag repeats the auxiliary verb (or main verb when be) from the statement and changes it to negative or positive.

HOW DO YOU FORM A TAG QUESTION?

Normally a positive statement is followed by a negative tag, and a negative statement is followed by a positive tag.
For example:-
You're English,
aren't you?
You're not German,
are you?

The statement and the tag are always separated by a comma.

The verb in the statement should be the same tense as the verb in the tag.

For example:-

Past tense
You didn't go to work yesterday, did you?

If the verb used in the statement is an auxiliary verb, then the verb used in the tag must match it. If a modal (can, could, will, should, etc.) is used in the statement, then the same modal is used in the tag part. If the statement doesn't use an auxilliary verb, then the auxiliary do is used in the tag part.

SPECIAL CASES

Use will/would with imperatives (Simple Present).
Open the window, will you?
Open the window, would you?
Don't open your books, will you?

We use won't with a polite request.
Open the window, won't you?

 We use shall after Let's.
Let's take the next bus, shall we?

We must be at home at 8 pm, mustn't we?
